Hockey World Cup in Kiev

In April I watched a hockey match between Ukraine and Great Britain. Unfortunately our team lost that game nevertheless there is enough space to improve in both teams. But the overall impression is good. This was a nice present to my birth day. Thanks a lot!

System Thinking and Software Architecture

This evening I decided to surf the web looking for updates on MIT SDM site. It seems the group in linkedin is dead since no activity is seen for the last 2 months.

I was surprised to find a webinar page. Nevertheless webinars are organized more or less regularly the last two are completely useless for the joint program like SDM. It seems in MIT there are also professors from Mars. Sorry.

Still I found an interesting presentation about system thinking tools and practices used for system architecture. I enjoyed it since the lecturer shares her own experience that has a concrete practical impact.

In Praise of Resource Constraints

The article "In Praise of Resource Constraints" by By Michael Gibbert, Martin Hoegl and Liisa Välikangas in MIT Sloan Management Review raises an important question how to allocate resources effectively. At first site a sound idea will be to allocate resouces according to the needs. But the authors have a different insight at the problem:
It may pay to remember the old Finnish army adage (derived from Finland’s battles against much bigger adversaries throughout the course of its history): “If the heavy armor does not move with four people pushing it, take one man away and let us see if three can do it!”

I would agree, there should be a reason to innovate. But still a sound balance should be kept. This is where an art begins...

Do You Write Right Stuff

Today I have read an article "They write the right stuff" . It is completely not new. Still I enjoyed some chritisism of existing and widely used approaches to software engineering.
And probably they have the right to do so, look:
According to statistics the last three versions of the product contained only 1 issue per 420,000 lines of code (no code generators, this is shutle onboard computer!)
Jone Manson, software engineer and professor of informatics, says that compute science is not a science at all. "It is a cave art!"
According to the studies made 70% (by GDP I believe) of the companies stucked in chaos or something that is a little better than chaos.
It is a pitty but I would agree ...

Data Stream Management Systems

Recently I have read an article in IEEE Computer Society, Dec 2010 about Data Stream Management Systems and their application to finance sector. Later I found a full article that is available here .
In the article Microsoft StreamInsite engine is used as an example. It is a part of MS SQL Server Platform 2008R2.
I was also curious whether there are any other commercial products that implement such an approach and can be used for an enterprise. Unfortunately I couldn't find any. And Wikipedia gives references on academic investigation projects only like STREAM or Aurora. Strange...

On Saturday Oregon and Lee Ritenour made a great show. In all cases it is better to see and to listen rather than to read. In short: Oregon is style, improvisation. Lee Ritenour is splash of blues. Just look at them:

Is Java Still WORA?

According to James Gosling interview on Hadoop summit Oracle will definitely concentrate on server side platform enhancements to bring more safety and efficiency to J2EE world. Sounds good. http://www.osp.ru/news/articles/2010/27/13002964/

At the same time focus of mobile vendors is moving to developing their application platforms by their own. In this area the future of Java is not clear.

I see the reasons for that since there is no a five star solution that will satisfy everyone. Still it could be not efficient and will definitely split up technologies.

Nevertheless sooner or later technologists will come up with an idea of having a common runtime. The world moves spiral.

Obvious Incredible Series

Today I eventually watched “Obvious Incredible” that is the eldest scientific TV program in USSR and Russia.

In the series the TV presenter and guests discussed the problems of strategic planning and its role for the world today. It was very informative to know peculiarities of planning/foreseeing in Japan and Finland. Well, and of course listening to conversationalist is always fascinating.

Providing an unprecedented conditions for attracting capital, China is making the next step - the export of technology. This takes industrial parks, which are developed in two forms: in Hong Kong, where the work can be any, including foreign companies and Zhong-Huan-Chun, created by the Academy of Sciences. The project cost is $ 1.5 billion. The aim is to create a platform for the development of innovative products targeting huge production and consumption potential in China. The main challenge is to make a technology park as attractive to the leaders of high-tech industries as to young developers of future technologies.

“Every, even a foreign company, can come here” - said Joseph Liu, marketing manager at Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation . “We have already half of our workforce come abroad. The main condition - the company must have an interesting research project. We accept those who have not less than 60% of the budget for research”.

Although the park is already populated, construction will be completed in 2011. By this time here to build research centers for the four main areas: electronics, biotech, precision mechanics, IT and telecommunications.

The body of scientific research park is built equipment, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The unique complex offers residents of the Science park based on the hourly rental fees. Therefore, the smallest company, just a group of enthusiasts can take advantage of them.

The scheme is as follows: an initiative group with the idea, records in Hong Kong, creates venture, finds an “angel”, who provides funding for initial development. Then the project is accepted in the “family” and gets access to all amenities.

“Engineers are working very hard”, - said the marketing manager of the park, Joseph Liu. Apparently, the “angels” as always have not enough money, and need to achieve results as soon as possible.

To such enthusiasts the technopark provides everything from rest rooms to dorms and hostel, a room in which stands a third of the rental cost of a city apartment. Private apartment in the park will cost already $2 thousand per month. “Soon we will build another 330 thousand square meters, meters of housing, which is planning to take on $10 per square meter” - commented Liu .- “When the construction is completed, the Science Park will run 23 thousand people”.

To support companies in the Technology Park, it offers several types of financial aid: government grants, business incubator program and funded technology parks.

Incubation Program is designed to help technology startups in the beginning. In addition to funding, and participants receive scientific expertise (universities), training and education (forums and seminars), as well as marketing support (product launches, exhibitions, etc.).

The typical recipient of an incubator - a team of three or four engineers with an ingenious idea. If their technology is really promising, in the first year they will be exempt from rent, and for the second year it will be 50%.

In addition, from $150 million industrial park that annually allocates the purchase of new equipment and the costs associated with research they can count on a certain budget to be offset bills for rent and research equipment.

“Since we produce most talented company to the point where it can be shown venture investor” - said Joseph Liu . “In this note, we are not asking for a share in its capital”.

The second contender for the title of Silicon Valley - Zhong-Huan-Chun Street in Beijing. Here are the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Pekin University, Polytechnic Institute of Zhong-Huan University and other famous universities. Here is the most vibrant economy in China. Several new concepts - the economy of knowledge, the Internet economy authoritatively explained there. The average age is younger than 30 years!

Over the years of reforms and openness in the economic development in China were different hot spots: in the 80 years ahead was Shenzhen. In the 21 century, Zhong-Huan-Chun, as the representative of the new businesses and high technology, is becoming the leading force in the development of Chinese economy.

As an American "Silicone Valley of Zhong-Huan-Chun passed his way. Initial development and increase capacity is dependent on the market economy. More than 20 years ago, China decided to deploy the wheel of economic development, since the country began the current reform.

October 23, 1980 Researcher of the Academy of Sciences of China Chen Chunsyan first opened on the street Zhong-Huan-Chun private item of equipment at the Beijing Society of plasma.By the end of 1986 in the Zhong-Huan-Chun were discovered about 100 companies develop, gradually formed “electronic street”, where the private company is developing electronic equipment and markets.

Google Wave Hacked?

I have just read  China's Internet Paradox at MIT Technology Review and thought the topic can be referred to the situation happened with me this morning.

Today I’ve visited the CodeCamp conference in Kyiv. After the greeting words I  had a couple of minutes. I checked my mailbox and found a suspicious letter from my college who was sitting nearby.

The content was:

 

The message was sent on Saturday at 6.30 a.m.! Furthermore the content was definitely a spam. And finally my college didn't know my private email address (gmail account) as well as private addresses of other recipients of the letter. But!!! All the recipients are subscribed to the same google wave.

The only place how this information could be disclosed is the google address book. And what is the worst the message was found in the sent messages queue of gmail client.

Looks like google had not learned yet it has become a pawn of a big game.
