The EU announced a new project Europeana. It is planned the project will become a digital library, museum and archive.
Frankly speaking I had similiar idea in my mind, still the Europeana implementation will be much more interesting than mine.
I'm really waiting for "a more robust solution"! http://europeana.eu/portal/
